The latest platform from Google is created to bring Android, Google and Flash directly in your existing TV. In other words, Google TV brings the internet in to your television set. At the core of every Google TV device is an Intel CE4100 media processor and runs on Android. However, Android is presented in a different format than its smart phone version. But it will follow the same model to a certain extent with some added Google specific TV applications.
Google TV runs Flash 10.11 beta and paired with Chrome, it is a most welcome feature. With an Intel processor and Android which is controlled with a mouse and keyboard, it can be said that Google TV is a PC in disguise as a television set. The Logitech and Sony devices enable users to connect to the internet as well as the satellite box or cable. Google TV is created to be much more than the regular television experience and will offer you a chance to discover more.
As of now, the available applications for Google TV are somewhat limited. Apart from Netflix, Pandora and Picassa along with a handful of others, it is quite a disappointment for those who are on the lookout for Google TV compatible applications. On the other hand, most of the other apps are nothing more than links to websites offering video streaming. Clicking on a app will lead to the browser and then have you directed to a website. In other words, there is not much difference than a regular PC. It must be noted that ABC, CBS, NBC is not offering access in to their programming via Google TV’s Browser. Hulu.com is also inaccessible until Google manages to develop an application for the streaming service on the Google TV platform.
The user interface is somewhat disappointing as it does not with the same level of relaxation and comforts most of us associate with television. Instead of pressing a few buttons on a remote, there will be a great deal of typing involved which will eventually have users reminiscing of work. On the other hand, the drop down feature of the search bar is a welcome feature which makes changing channels much easier and smoother. However, the video search has plenty of room for improvement.
However, Google TV is not all disappointment. For instance, DualView is one of the most desirable features offered by Google TV. IT allows you to shrink the TV image and positions it overlaid at the bottom right corner of the interface, allowing you to browse the web or use an application while waiting for the advertisement break end. It is a useful and much needed feature and Google TV offers access to it at the press of a button. However, the drawback is the speed. It takes a little while to take action and the other area that needs tending is the fact that the shrunk TV window cannot be moved.
Overall, Google TV is indeed a novel idea but it definitely needs some improvement before it becomes a living room norm.
